Character and identity
The Twin Fin sits at the Diamond Head end of Kalākaua Avenue, directly across from the surf break that gives it its tagline, "check in, surf out." A 645-room high-rise reborn from the former Aston Waikiki under Highgate's recent multi-million-dollar overhaul, the property leans into a breezy mid-century beach aesthetic: turquoise, coral and sand tones in the rooms, abstract ocean murals by POW! WOW! through the public spaces, and a mezzanine pool above the street. Dining runs from Coconut Club on the 21st floor (cooked-to-order breakfast with Diamond Head views) to poolside Tiki's for sunset Mai Tais. Service is warm and unforced, Aloha in practice.
Who's it for
Best for:
Surfers and surf-adjacent partners who want the break literally across the street, plus families drawn to the protected swimming at Kuhio Beach, the nearby zoo and aquarium, and complimentary board, paddleboard and beach-chair rentals at Beach Candy. Also strong for travellers who like a sociable, mixed international crowd and don't need a hushed resort hush.
Should look elsewhere:
Anyone after an intimate boutique or a quiet luxury bolthole will find 645 rooms and the Waikiki holiday-maker buzz too much. Design purists may find Tiki's cheesy, and there's no private beach or sprawling resort grounds.
Bottom line
The location does the heavy lifting here: surf out front, Kapi'olani Park and quieter beaches to the left, the Waikiki strip to the right, all from a freshly renovated room with a lanai. Book an ocean-front category for the sunsets and the seagulls-eye view, and target the quieter shoulder months. Best value for active travellers and families, not for seclusion seekers.
