Timbers Kauai Ocean Club & Residences
Review
Character and identity
Set on an oceanfront bluff five minutes from Lihue Airport, Timbers Kauai is a 40-residence enclave within the 450-acre Hokuala community, with a restored golf course, lagoon system, and a working organic farm at its centre. The accommodations (designed by Poss Architecture + Planning) lean into a low-impact modern idiom: hardwood floors, neutral palettes, Thermador kitchens, deep soaking tubs, in-room laundry, and generous lanais, some with private pools or built-in grills. Hualani's, the oceanfront restaurant under Chef Amorin, anchors the social life. Service is warm and family-style, what the house calls "barefoot sophistication."
Who's it for
Best for:
Multigenerational families and couples who want the space and self-sufficiency of a residence (full kitchen, laundry, multiple gathering areas) paired with hotel-grade service. Ideal if you value an outdoor lifestyle, paddling, golf, e-biking, farm tours, cultural workshops, and a relaxed dress code over a polished resort scene.
Should look elsewhere:
Travellers who want to walk straight from their room onto sand should reconsider: the beach is a seven-minute walk down from the bluff. Those after a buzzy multi-restaurant resort or formal luxury choreography will find the single-restaurant, low-key register too quiet.
Bottom line
This is a residential-style property, not a conventional resort, and that defines everything: you get apartment-scale living, a farm-to-table kitchen, and family-friendly run of 450 acres, but no beachfront and limited on-site dining. Book it if you're staying a week or more with family or another couple; spring for a unit with ocean-view lanai, and aim for a sunset table at Hualani's on night one.
