Character and identity
Trump Turnberry occupies 800 acres of Ayrshire coastline where Robert the Bruce once held a castle, and the Edwardian hotel from 1906 still presides over it all in grand style. Expect porters in tartan kilts, sweeping sea views toward Ailsa Craig and the Isle of Arran, and 219 rooms, suites and cottages scattered between the main house, dunes and clifftops, including the two-bedroom Turnberry Lighthouse. Three links courses, three restaurants led by the produce-driven 1906, a spa with a 65-foot infinity pool, and an Activity Centre running everything from archery to off-road driving define daily life.
Who's it for
Best for:
Golfers, first and foremost. The Ailsa course has hosted four British Opens, the King Robert the Bruce course (opened 2017) offers castle-ruin vistas, and the Performance Academy uses AI swing mapping for lessons. It also suits couples wanting a stately countryside retreat with afternoon tea in the Grand Tea Lounge, spa days, and excursions to Culzean Castle and Dumfries House.
Should look elsewhere:
Travellers wanting urban energy, contemporary minimalist design, or warm-weather beach holidays. Non-golfers paying golfer rates may feel they are subsidising fairways they will never walk. The exposed coastal setting can be genuinely gusty and remote from Glasgow.
Bottom line
The defining proposition here is golf on championship links with Edwardian-hotel comforts and tartan-clad Scottish service wrapped around it. Book if you intend to play the Ailsa or Robert the Bruce; the spa, 1906's dry-aged Ayrshire beef, and the lighthouse suite are genuine bonuses rather than the reason to come. Shoulder-season stays trade some weather risk for quieter tee sheets and better rates.
