Character and identity
Umana Bali sits atop a 230-foot cliff above Melasti Beach on the island's southern coast, an all-villa resort that opened in late 2023 on the bones of a former Banyan Tree. The 72 villas, designed by WATG and Wimberly Interiors, are spread across lush, undulating terrain with wide views of the Indian Ocean and sorbet-toned sunrises and sunsets. The architectural concept draws on Tri Hita Karana, the Balinese philosophy of harmony with nature, community and the divine. Expect cliffside dining at Oliverra, Balinese and Indonesian cooking alongside Western fare, and treatments at Lohma Spa.
Who's it for
Best for:
Couples and honeymooners after privacy, sunset views and in-villa dining, and families who want serious space and a standout Kids Club (hot air balloon slide, ball pit, real programming). Design-minded travellers and spa devotees will find plenty to engage with, especially through cultural experiences like village walks, temple visits and cooking classes.
Should look elsewhere:
Anyone wanting a walk-out beach hotel or a buzzy, social resort scene should skip this one: the cliff setting means the beach is a descent away, and the all-villa layout is built for seclusion rather than mingling. Urban-energy seekers should head to Seminyak or Canggu instead.
Bottom line
The villas here are the headline: even the entry-level one-bedrooms run 4,300 square feet with private infinity pools, and the three-bedrooms hit 13,000 square feet with their own spa and entertainment rooms. Book it if you want space, romance and ceremony rather than beach-club energy. The one-bedroom pool villa is the sweet spot; couples should pre-book an Oliverra dinner and the four-hour Tri Hita Karana spa journey.
