Character and identity
Set in a 1920s brick and terra cotta building that once housed the Cedar Hotel, Viceroy Chicago plants 180 rooms and suites in the heart of the Gold Coast, a few blocks from Oak Street Beach. TAL Studio's interiors run on a gold and teal palette, midcentury furniture and playful flourishes (a 30-foot Proust wall in the lobby, different-coloured guest room doors, striped walls at the elevator bank). Downstairs, Somerset turns out polished American cooking from one of the city's best-known chefs; up on the 18th floor, Pandan pairs an alfresco pool and skyline views with cocktails like the Red Panda and dumplings at the bar.
Who's it for
Best for:
Design-literate couples and city-breakers who want a stylish base inside one of Chicago's most walkable neighbourhoods, with Gibson's, Maple & Ash and Division Street nightlife on the doorstep and the lakefront a short stroll or bike ride away. Rooftop drinkers and dog owners (the hotel furnishes beds and bowls) are well served.
Should look elsewhere:
Spa-focused travellers will find the offering thin: there's no in-house spa, just a discount partnership with nearby Exhale. Families chasing a resort-style experience or anyone wanting quiet seclusion should pick a different neighbourhood, as the surrounding streets stay lively well into the night.
Bottom line
What you're really paying for here is design and location: a thoughtfully restored Gold Coast tower with two genuinely good food and drink venues and the lake within walking distance. Book it if you want a stylish urban weekend with strong dining built in; aim for a higher floor for the views, and plan at least one evening at Pandan. Warmer months unlock the rooftop pool and complimentary bikes.
