Character and identity
Set on a quiet bend of the Arno four miles east of Florence, Villa La Massa is a former Medici country estate of five buildings (Noble Villa, Villino, the Mill, Casa Colonica and the Limonaia) spread across 62 acres of parkland and gardens designed by Maria Chiara Pozzana. The 54 rooms split between a traditional main villa and country-style annexes. Il Verrocchio handles candlelit riverside dinners under chef Stefano Ballarino, Oliveto does poolside lunches, and Bar Mediceo pours cocktails in retro surrounds. The Arno Spa works with Officina Farmaceutica di Santa Maria Novella products. Service is old-school, charming, efficient.
Who's it for
Best for:
Couples and families who want a Tuscan country retreat with Florence on tap via the complimentary shuttle (20 minutes into town). It suits guests who value gardens, a serious pool, a quiet riverside setting, and proper cooking over urban buzz. Families get a playground, pizza-making, and roomy interconnecting suites in Casa Colonica.
Should look elsewhere:
Anyone wanting to walk out the door into Florence itself should stay central; the surrounding suburbs offer nothing for visitors. Decor in the main villa is being phased out floor by floor from 2025, so traditionalists who loved the canopied four-posters may find things in transition. The hotel also closes mid-November through early April.
Bottom line
What sets this place apart is the marriage of a genuine Medici estate with enough acreage, pool, spa and kitchen-garden cooking to anchor a multi-day stay, while keeping Florence a shuttle ride away. Book the Limonaia for river views and private gardens, or Casa Colonica suites for families. Aim for late spring or September, when the riverside terrace and pool program are in full swing.
