Character and identity
Occupying part of a 51-story tower in Center City just south of City Hall, W Philadelphia opened in 2021 and threads local references through its ultramodern design: a lobby floor that reproduces a 19th-century gridded map of the city, Ben Franklin toile bed linens, light fixtures riffing on his lightning rod experiments. Across 295 rooms, expect mural headboards, rainfall showers and Davines amenities. Dolce handles pastas and Neapolitan pizzas, but the bar programme led by Isai Xolalpa is the real draw, split between the Living Room lobby bar and the seventh-floor Wet Deck above a heated rooftop pool. The Away Spa adds a quieter counterpoint. Service is efficient with personality.
Who's it for
Best for:
Couples on a weekend break, creative-industry travellers and design-minded business guests who want a stylish, social base within walking distance of Reading Terminal Market, the Avenue of the Arts and the business district. Cocktail enthusiasts and rooftop loungers get particular value, and the concierge handles families more thoughtfully than the glossy aesthetic suggests.
Should look elsewhere:
Travellers after a hushed, traditional luxury register will find the lobby energy and 20-something local crowd too much. Families wanting a dedicated kids' programme, and anyone whose priority is a destination restaurant rather than a bar scene, should look at quieter Center City alternatives.
Bottom line
The defining reason to book is the bar programme and rooftop, paired with genuinely well-judged local design that lifts this above standard chain territory. Spend up for a Marvelous Suite on a higher floor: the floor-to-ceiling windows, oversized tub and in-room dining table justify the jump, especially if you plan to use room service.
