Character and identity
A 408-room oceanfront resort on a quieter stretch of South Beach, opposite the Bass Museum of Art and Collins Park, with Lincoln Road a ten-minute walk south. A $30 million refresh in 2020 softened the original high-gloss noir into something brighter and more composed, with millwork, oak and a pastel palette nodding to old Miami. Expect the largest guest rooms in South Beach, all with balconies and ocean views, two pools, a rooftop tennis and basketball complex, the light-filled Away spa, and a $50 million contemporary art collection that includes Warhols and Warhol-Basquiat collaborations.
Who's it for
Best for:
Style-conscious couples and groups who want a buzzy pool scene with cabana service on weekends but also the option to retreat into landscaped groves and a serene spa. Families do well in the Oasis suites with full kitchens, living rooms and media rooms, and sporty kids gravitate to the SWISH & SWING courts.
Should look elsewhere:
Travellers seeking a hushed, adults-only sanctuary or a traditional luxury register will find the weekend pool energy and fashion-set crowd a lot. Those who want to walk straight into Ocean Drive nightlife may prefer somewhere further south.
Bottom line
The defining trick here is the dual personality: a genuine scene by the pool and a calm, art-filled retreat a few steps away, in rooms larger than anything else on the beach. Book an Oasis suite if you are travelling with family or staying more than a few nights, and aim for shoulder season if the weekend cabana crowd is not your thing. The W Insider concierge is worth using.
