Character and identity
A reimagined Howard Johnson motor lodge on the southern edge of Palm Springs, this 180-room property trades Rat Pack nostalgia for a rugged, Saharan-desert mood: tent-canvas walls, matching quilts, steamer trunks holding spare pillows, striped Berber-style robes and magazine racks stocked with vintage National Geographics. The grounds run to mature palms, olive trees and outdoor fireplaces, with two pools framed by royal palms and snowcapped peaks beyond. King's Highway, set in a former Denny's, turns out seasonal cooking with Mexican and Cajun accents. A small but well-stocked spa, a dog park and a confidently bohemian service register complete the picture.
Who's it for
Best for:
Design-literate couples, creative travellers and weekenders from LA who want a desert escape with character rather than polish. Poolside loungers, music-and-cocktail crowds, and dog owners will feel at home, as will anyone who treasures atmosphere, vintage detailing and a relaxed, slightly scruffy sense of place over button-down luxury.
Should look elsewhere:
Travellers who want marble bathrooms, instant hot water and resort-grade square footage should book elsewhere. Bathrooms run small, the water takes its time, and the overall register is intentionally lo-fi. Families chasing kids' clubs or guests expecting white-glove formality won't find them here.
Bottom line
The appeal here is mood, not amenity: a desert lodge styled with conviction, anchored by a great pool, a characterful restaurant and grounds that feel genuinely transporting. Book it if you value atmosphere over polish, and aim for a King Patio or poolside room. Shoulder-season rates in late spring and early autumn give the best value before summer heat or winter peak pricing kicks in.
