Character and identity
A 1952 William F. Cody design restored by interior designer Steve Hermann, L'Horizon is a 25-key bungalow compound that captures Palm Springs at its most pared-back: desert, mountains, mid-century lines, and a serious pool. Accommodation is 24 bungalows plus The Residence (the former home of Hollywood producer Jack Wrather, with its own pool and yard). Days run on poolside drinks; nights move to So-Pa, the al fresco restaurant with firepits and an eclectic menu. Service is small-team and first-name, with Frette sheets, Le Labo Santal 33, Apple TVs, and Nest thermostats inside each bungalow.
Who's it for
Best for:
Design-literate couples, architecture and art enthusiasts, and Angelenos after a low-key weekend in the desert. If you care about mid-century detail done properly (the stacks of design books in the rooms are a giveaway), value being on first-name terms with the staff, and want to combine pool time with the Palm Springs Art Museum or a Joshua Tree day trip, this suits.
Should look elsewhere:
Families wanting a kids' club, groups needing scale, or anyone after multiple restaurants and a buzzy lobby scene. With one dining outlet and 25 keys, it's intentionally quiet. Dog owners should note the $150 cleaning fee.
Bottom line
What you're paying for is the integrity of the restoration and the intimacy of a 25-key property where staff actually know you, not a resort with a long amenity list. Couples and design enthusiasts get the most out of it; splurge on The Residence if you want a private pool, and aim for the cooler shoulder months when the desert is at its best.
