andBeyond Bateleur Camp
Review
Character and identity
Tucked into a forested fold of the Masai Mara, this 18-tent camp delivers the old-world safari fantasy in full: drifty curtains, leather armchairs, crystal decanters, brass fittings and historic maps, all reused or reupholstered through a recent renovation. The tented suites are now larger and lighter, with glasshouse bathrooms, Victorian tubs, courtyard showers and private decks with sunken lounges over the plains. Two linked small camps share a gin bar, gym, boutique, spa and individual pools. Service runs warm and personal, with a private butler per tent, set against a soundtrack of running water, birds and distant lions.
Who's it for
Best for:
Couples and families who want the full theatrical safari fantasy with serious creature comforts, and safari circuit travellers, both first-timers and old hands, who value attentive, remembered-by-name service, walkable camp layout, and reliably rich game viewing across the open Mara plains.
Should look elsewhere:
Travellers chasing minimalist, contemporary design will find the vintage Burgundy-and-gramophone register too dressed-up. Anyone wanting a quick, low-commitment trip, or guests uncomfortable with the sounds (and proximity) of wildlife at night, should choose differently.
Bottom line
The draw here is the marriage of theatrical, decadent tented living with andBeyond's conservation-led guiding and a kitchen, led by chef Michael Jackson, that actually listens. Book it for a milestone safari with a partner or family, request a tent with the Mara-facing sunken deck, and slot it into a multi-camp East Africa circuit for the strongest value against the nightly rate.
