Angama Mara
Review
Character and identity
Perched on the Oloololo escarpment above the Mara Triangle, Angama Mara is a 30-suite lodge split across two intimate 15-suite camps, opened in 2016. The accommodation rewrites the safari tent: canvas sides and tented roofs combined with full glass fronts that frame 180-degree views of the savannah from bed or shower. The design register is sleek and Italian-inflected, more cosmopolitan than bush-rustic, anchored by a central pavilion with library, shop, gym and infinity pool. A single restaurant blends modern and Maasai aesthetics around an international à la carte menu.
Who's it for
Best for:
Design-literate couples and well-travelled safari guests who want the Mara without the regimented two-game-drives-a-day rhythm. The flexible programme (full-day drives, short outings, birding, Maasai-led walks) suits independent-minded travellers, while the view-from-bed factor makes this a strong honeymoon or milestone-trip pick.
Should look elsewhere:
Purists chasing a traditional canvas-and-kerosene safari feel may find the architectural polish and pavilion amenities too contemporary. With one restaurant and a single dining concept, food-focused travellers seeking variety across multiple venues should look at larger lodges or multi-camp itineraries.
Bottom line
The defining feature here is the view and the way the suites are built around it: glass-fronted rooms on the escarpment edge mean game-watching continues even when you're not in a vehicle. Book a suite in the camp closest to the pavilion if you want easy access to the pool and library, and target the dry-season window (July to October) for the river crossings down in the Triangle.
