Casa Chablé sits deep inside the Si'an Kaan Biosphere Reserve, a UNESCO coastal wilderness reached by a small boat across Campeche Lagoon after the drive south from Tulum. The property holds just ten keys, split between five suites in the thatched Casa Principal and five beachfront villas, with interiors that mix whitewashed walls, sapodilla wood floors, Oaxacan ceramics and beaded chandeliers. The food programme is overseen by Jorge Vallejo of Mexico City's Quintonil, with Chef Williams Saurina cooking dishes like Tikin Xic sea bass wrapped in totomoxtle leaf. A rooftop jacuzzi looks out over the Caribbean, and service is low-key and personal.

Couples and design-minded travellers who want genuine seclusion, birdlife and reef snorkelling over scene and nightlife. It suits Yucatan road-trippers, returning Chablé loyalists, and anyone who finds the idea of a hammock strung between two palms and a sunrise-and-sunset-over-water pier more compelling than a pool deck.
Should look elsewhere:
Families with young children, party-seekers and anyone who needs easy access to restaurants, shops or Tulum's bar circuit. Skip it if you require a proper pool, multiple dining venues, or step-free access, the property runs on stairs with no ramps or elevators.
Bottom line
The setting is the entire proposition here: arriving by boat into a 2,000-square-mile reserve, with only nine other rooms for company and frigate birds overhead. Book a beachfront villa rather than a Casa Principal suite (Hunab Ku if you can get it), build in a guided Si'an Kaan excursion or reef snorkel, and come for three or four nights, less and the journey doesn't pay off.
