Character and identity
Tucked behind a stone wall on the edge of downtown Palm Springs in the Historic Tennis Club neighborhood, Casa Cody is the city's oldest operating hotel, founded in the 1920s and now a Class 1 historic site. The 30 rooms, from poolside studios to standalone cottages and the four-person Adobe House with its underground wine cellar, are scattered across 1.5 acres of citrus trees, bougainvillea, stone paths and two turquoise pools. A 2020 renovation layered zellige tile, vintage art and Parachute linens over the early-1900s bones. Harriet's Bar & Lounge handles food; service runs warm, personal and unmistakably SoCal.
Who's it for
Best for:
Couples and design-literate travellers who want Palm Springs history without the desert-minimalist uniform, plus anyone craving a quiet, garden-bound retreat within walking distance of downtown. Architecture buffs, slow-paced poolside readers, and guests who prize being remembered by name will feel right at home. Families and dogs are welcome with notice.
Should look elsewhere:
If you want a full-service resort with a proper spa, multiple restaurants, or a buzzy scene, this isn't it. Light sleepers should avoid the studios ringing the pools, and anyone needing total privacy should note that the abundant windows trade discretion for desert light.
Bottom line
What you're paying for is character and intimacy: a 30-key historic property where the staff juice citrus picked from the garden and the cottages feel genuinely residential. Book a standalone cottage with an outdoor soaking tub, or splurge on the Adobe House if you're travelling as a group. Shoulder season delivers the gardens at their best.
