Character and identity
Set atop a hill inside the Luberon Regional Nature Park, Coquillade occupies a restored 11th-century hamlet surrounded by its own vineyards and lavender fields, with 360-degree views in every direction. The 63 rooms blend medieval stone with contemporary additions, and the property sprawls across terraces, gardens and two heated outdoor pools. Three restaurants handle Provençal cuisine and estate wine from the Aureto cellar; a 16,145-square-foot spa runs hammam, ice fountain, indoor pool and 12 treatment cabins; and a proper BMC Cycling Center sends guests out toward Mont Ventoux. The register is rural-luxe rather than formal.
Who's it for
Best for:
Couples and small groups who want Provence at its most postcard-perfect, with serious cycling, wine tasting on the estate, and long spa afternoons built in. Oenophiles, road cyclists, and dog owners (there's a dedicated canine programme with beds, bowls and sitting) are particularly well served.
Should look elsewhere:
Anyone wanting walkable village life, coastal swimming, or buzzy nightlife should book closer to the Riviera proper. The hilltop seclusion means you're committed to the property and a car; travellers seeking urban energy or beach days will feel stranded.
Bottom line
The draw here is the setting and the activity programme woven into it: vineyards you can actually walk, a cycling centre with expert guides, and a spa large enough to disappear into for a day. Come for three or four nights, take a vineyard-facing room, and target late spring or early autumn when the lavender, light and cycling conditions all align.
