Character and identity
Cristine Bedfor is a 21-room guesthouse spread across three buildings in the historic centre of Mahón, the capital of Menorca, conceived as the fictional alter ego of owner Cristina Lozano and her nod to the island's British past. Lorenzo Castillo's interiors abandon the expected Mediterranean blue-and-white for intense greens and mustards, velvet, linen, floral prints, and antiques sourced from Madrid, the Basque Country, the UK, and local dealers. There is no reception, just a cheerful lobby where keys wait for you. A small patio pool and a garden with a little shop anchor the property. Cristine's Table, run with Ses Forquilles, handles the cooking.
Who's it for
Best for:
Design-minded couples and culturally curious travellers who want to be in the thick of Mahón, walking to the Old Port, Mercat del Peix, and the terraces and bars around it. The Hauser & Wirth Menorca crowd will feel at home. Solo travellers and art and antiques lovers, too.
Should look elsewhere:
Anyone wanting a beach hotel, a full-service resort, or formal five-star polish. Service is intentionally casual and guesthouse-scaled rather than luxurious. Families wanting a kids' club, nightlife seekers, and travellers who need a proper spa programme will not find it here.
Bottom line
The appeal is the personality of the house itself: an idiosyncratic, antique-rich townhouse with serious local cooking, set in town rather than on the coast. Book it if you want Menorca through a design and food lens and plan to drive to the beaches. The patio pool compensates but does not replace the sea. Rooms are all different, so ask for specifics when booking.
