Character and identity
A five-bedroom bolthole tucked on a side street steps from Telluride's main drag and the gondola, Dunton Town House is the in-town counterpart to the owners' Dunton Hot Springs and River Camp properties an hour south. The clapboard exterior reads classic Colorado B&B; inside, it's pure Tyrol, a nod to the Austrian emigrés who shaped this mining region (and to the owners' own roots). Expect hand-carved wooden antiques, authentic Austrian fabrics, eclectic original art, a mud room, and a family-style dining table. With just 10 guests at a time and a concierge who handles everything from lift tickets to fly-fishing on the San Miguel, the register is full-service but unmistakably homey.
Who's it for
Best for:
Design-literate skiers, couples, and small families who want a stylish, intimate base in the heart of Telluride rather than a big-hotel experience up in Mountain Village. The plugged-in international crowd that follows the Dunton brand will feel at home, especially groups happy to buy out all five rooms.
Should look elsewhere:
Anyone wanting full-service hotel amenities, a proper restaurant, bar scene, or spa on site. Breakfast is the only meal served. Travellers who prefer anonymity over a shared dining table and B&B intimacy will be happier in a larger property.
Bottom line
What you're buying here is location and personality: a tightly curated five-room house within walking distance of the gondola, run with the polish of the Dunton portfolio but the feel of a friend's mountain home. Book it for ski season, ideally as a full buy-out with family or friends, and lean on Gareth to stitch the days together. Request a top-floor room for the San Juan views.
