Character and identity
Set in a converted granary on Giudecca island, Generator Venice is the design-led hostel arm of the international chain, occupying a historic palazzo that's been given a sharp makeover while keeping its architectural bones intact. The 29 rooms span private singles and doubles through quads to 16-bed dorms, some women-only. Downstairs, the ground floor functions as bar, lounge and social hub, often party-central in the evenings. Across the water sits Piazza San Marco, reached only by ferry. The vibe is design-savvy backpacker rather than boutique hotel, with service kept deliberately basic and guests spilling out onto the quiet Giudecca footpath on warm days.
Who's it for
Best for:
Budget travellers, solo backpackers and design-minded twenty-somethings who want a stylish base in Venice without paying San Marco prices, and who treat the sociable ground-floor bar as a feature rather than a bug. Quad rooms make it workable for families travelling lean.
Should look elsewhere:
Light sleepers, anyone with small children in tow, and travellers who want to walk straight out into central Venice. The ferry to the main islands is the only route across and it isn't cheap, dorm bathrooms can feel cramped and patchy on cleanliness, and service is functional at best.
Bottom line
The defining trade-off here is Giudecca itself: a calm, un-touristed perch with a postcard view of San Marco, but separated from the action by a paid ferry ride. Book a private double if you want quiet and an ensuite, accept the dorms only if you're genuinely on a backpacker budget, and avoid high season when rates climb sharply for what remains hostel accommodation.
