Character and identity
Tucked into a Neoclassical building opposite the Royal Danish Theatre, Hotel Sanders is the 54-room passion project of former principal dancer Alexander Kølpin, and the whole place feels more like a beautifully kept private residence than a hotel. Earthy greens and browns, bamboo, palms, wicker and wooden cabinetry set the tone across guest rooms that read as Scandi apartments. Sanders Kitchen serves Scandinavian classics from local, organic ingredients all day, food that travels to the courtyard, the Living Room, Sanders Street or the glass-covered rooftop. The 1950s-styled Tata Cocktail Bar handles classic drinks with bowtied waiters and velvet armchairs.
Who's it for
Best for:
Design-literate couples and solo travellers who want a small, residential-feeling bolthole within walking or cycling distance of Nyhavn, the theatre, galleries and the central city. Ideal if you value calm interiors, all-day eating in unfussy rooms, complimentary bikes, and curated Sanders Experiences into Copenhagen's art, architecture and political life.
Should look elsewhere:
Families wanting connecting rooms and kids' programming, or travellers who want a full spa, pool and gym set-up, won't find that here. The hotel-as-home register also means lower-key service theatre than a grand luxury house, which can disappoint guests expecting formality.
Bottom line
What you're paying for is atmosphere: a quietly stylish, plant-filled Neoclassical townhouse that feels lived-in rather than staged, with food and drink woven through every room of the building. Couples on a city break should book it; the 667-square-foot Sanders Suite, with its kitchenette and dining room, is the one to stretch for if you want to settle in.
