Character and identity
JOALI occupies a 24-acre island in the remote Raa Atoll, an hour by seaplane from Malé, with no other resorts or inhabited islands in sight. The 73 villas, designed by Istanbul's Autoban, blend teak panelling, terrazzo flooring and Norwegian green marble with thatched roofs hand-woven by local craftspeople. Billed as the Maldives' first art-immersive resort, it scatters more than 60 commissioned pieces across the island, including Porky Hefer's manta ray treehouse. Five restaurants span Japanese-Peruvian (Saoke), Italian by Theodor Falser (Bellinis) and pan-Asian (Vandhoo). Service from the jadugar butlers is warm and anticipatory rather than starched.
Who's it for
Best for:
Design-literate couples and families who want a Maldives stay with cultural texture beyond the standard sand-and-spa formula. Art lovers, food-focused travellers, and parents who value substantive kids' programming (marine biology talks, oceanography lessons, the Art House pottery studio) will all find their lane here. Snorkellers get reef access from three sides.
Should look elsewhere:
Wellness purists may prefer the sister property, Joali Being, since the spa feels secondary here despite its floating yoga pavilion and overwater treatment rooms. Anyone seeking a hushed, adults-only retreat should note the convivial, family-friendly energy at the bars and restaurants.
Bottom line
What sets JOALI apart is the coherence of its design vision, art programme and seclusion, a rare trio in a market crowded with new openings. Book a Beach Villa for space and flora, or a high-numbered Sunset Water Villa if sundowns are the priority. Time a April visit for the Imagi-Nature Art Festival if the curation is what draws you.
