Character and identity
JOALI BEING occupies the tucked-away island of Bodufushi as the Maldives' dedicated wellbeing retreat, opened in late 2021 and built on biophilic principles that fold nature into the architecture. You arrive through the Gate of Zero, a sculptural white jetty inspired by whirling dervishes, and settle into one of 33 beach or 35 overwater villas done in gray and turquoise, each with an outdoor pool and a jadugar (butler). At the heart sits Areka, a cathedral-ceilinged wellness temple with 36 treatment rooms, Russian banya, hammam, Watsu pool and halotherapy. Two restaurants serve health-led but genuinely accomplished cooking, from Parsi akuri to lobster curry.
Who's it for
Best for:
Couples and solo travellers who want a structured wellness reset, not just a spa day. The five-day to three-week immersion programmes, built around mind, microbiome, skin or energy pillars, suit anyone serious about recalibrating, whether seasoned practitioners or newcomers. Design-literate guests will also respond to the architecture and the herbology centre at Aktar.
Should look elsewhere:
Travellers chasing a party-Maldives experience with free-flowing cocktails, or families with young children looking for kids' clubs and casual buffets. Drinkers will find the low-alcohol, probiotic-leaning beverage list limiting, and anyone wanting à la carte hedonism over programmed wellness should book a different island.
Bottom line
The immersion programme is the property, and skipping it means leaving most of the value in the box. Pre-arrival consultations, movement analysis and tailored daily itineraries are what justify the rate, while the food and villas keep it feeling like a holiday rather than a clinic. Book a beach villa if you want proximity to Areka, an overwater villa if you prize seclusion, and commit to at least the five-day programme.
