Character and identity
At the quiet eastern edge of Waikiki, where Kapi'olani Park's banyans give way to the sand and Diamond Head fills the horizon, this 124-room beachfront hotel offers a smaller-scale alternative to the towers down the strip. A 2021 refresh by Henderson Design Group brought a joyful palette of pastel pinks, canary yellows and turquoises, gallery-style art and upcycled furniture across the lobby and rooms. Hau Tree, the restaurant beneath a canopy of heart-shaped leaves, is led by James Beard nominee Chris Kajioka with Alan Takasaki. Kai Sallas's Pro Surf School operates on site. Service is warm and locally rooted, with concierge requests routed through the Ivy app.
Who's it for
Best for:
Couples and design-minded travellers who want Waikiki's sand and surf without its scooter traffic and high-rise crush. The beginner break off the beach, the surf school, sunset sails and bike rides around Diamond Head suit active guests, while the cooking at Hau Tree rewards anyone who treats dinner as part of the trip.
Should look elsewhere:
Families chasing a big resort with kids' clubs, pools and multiple dining venues should book elsewhere on Oahu. The same goes for travellers who want to walk straight into the Kalākaua Avenue action: you're at the edge looking in, which is the point, but it's a short trek to the historic Waikiki core.
Bottom line
What sets this place apart is the combination of a genuinely quiet stretch of Waikiki sand, a seriously good kitchen at Hau Tree, and a design refresh that actually feels cheerful rather than corporate. Spend up for a top-floor suite with a wraparound balcony, ideally the 838-square-foot Pacific Suite, and plan at least one dinner under the hau canopy with the 1944 Mai Tai and the scallops.
