Character and identity
A 1950s grande dame on the rare flat waterfront of cliff-bound Ischia, Regina Isabella opens straight onto a private marina, little beaches and sunbathing pontoons in the elegant town of Lacco Ameno. The 128 rooms span three buildings completed between 1956 and 1963, with cherrywood marquetry, Juliet balconies and Capodimonte tiled floors intact. Four pools, three restaurants (including Michelin-starred Indaco under Pasquale Lamar), and a temple-like thermal spa tapping Ischia's mineral-rich hot springs anchor the property. Owned by the Carriero family of Naples, the register is theatrical, individual, and unmistakably Italian.
Who's it for
Best for:
Couples and families chasing Dolce Vita atmosphere with genuine substance: thermal bathing, serious cooking, easy sea access without the usual Ischian staircases, and a design vocabulary that leans gloriously retro rather than minimalist. Returning Italian regulars set the tone. Wellness-minded travellers seeking mud, radon and balneotherapy will be in their element.
Should look elsewhere:
Anyone wanting a slick, contemporary trend-driven resort or pared-back design hotel should book elsewhere; the look is unapologetically vintage and a touch camp. Party-seekers and those who prefer anonymous polish over family-run eccentricity won't connect.
Bottom line
What sets this place apart is the combination almost impossible to find on Ischia: a flat waterfront position with direct sea access, paired with thermal springs piped straight from the volcano and a kitchen worth the journey. Book the Royal Wing for a private thermal plunge pool and Bay of Naples views, and arrive by the Magnum 53 launch from Naples to start as you mean to continue.
