Character and identity
Set between Funchal's Old Town and the Atlantic, Savoy Palace is Madeira's largest hotel at 309 rooms, yet it carries itself with the swagger of a far smaller property. Architect Nini Andrade Silva's Belle Epoque interiors run on botanical motifs drawn from the island's Laurisilva forest: flower-shaped fixtures, laurel patterns, a 33-foot chain chandelier anchoring the lobby. Expect four restaurants, a rooftop pool, a sea-facing main pool crossed by a lace-inspired bridge, and Laurea Spa, one of Portugal's largest with 11 treatment rooms, a hammam and Kneipp path. Pink-top-hatted doormen set a notably warm service tone.
Who's it for
Best for:
Couples and design-minded travellers who want grand-hotel scale with genuine craft in the interiors, serious spa time, and a walkable Funchal base near the seafront. The breakfast buffet, with house-cured meats, smoked salmon and island fruit, draws even locals, so food-curious guests do well here too.
Should look elsewhere:
Anyone hunting an intimate boutique feel will find 309 rooms simply too big, and there's no proper beach on the doorstep. Travellers wanting deep seclusion or a remote rural Madeira experience should look to the island's quintas.
Bottom line
What sets this place apart is the combination of spa scale and architectural ambition: few Portuguese hotels deliver both at this level. Rooms are modern, light-filled and finished in marble and walnut, with sea or mountain views. If budget allows, book into The Reserve, the 40-room 16th-floor enclave opened in January 2024, where plunge pools and a dedicated GEPA host justify the step up.
