Character and identity
The Chanler occupies an 1865 mansion at the northern end of Newport's Cliff Walk, the only hotel actually sitting on the 3.5-mile path, with Easton's Beach steps away and downtown a mile off. Stone walls and gravel driveway frame a five-acre estate that reads more private Gilded Age scion's residence than hotel. Just 20 rooms, each individually themed (Tudor, Williamsburg, Mediterranean, Victorian) and stocked with period antiques. Dining anchors the experience: chef's table at Cara, the new locally-sourced Remy's Loose, and a moodier lounge called The Living Room. Service is warm, knowledgeable, present but never hovering.
Who's it for
Best for:
Couples and design-literate travellers who want Newport's Gilded Age fantasy without leaving the property to feel it. Returning Newport regulars, anniversary trips, and anyone happy to alternate between Cliff Walk strolls, long dinners, and an in-room fireplace. The Ocean Villas, with private hot tubs and saunas, make a strong case for honeymooners.
Should look elsewhere:
Families with young kids, accessibility-dependent guests (only one room, the Colonial, works), and anyone wanting a full resort footprint (proper gym, on-site spa rooms, pool). One-and-done sightseers cramming Newport in a night will overpay for an experience built around lingering.
Bottom line
What you're paying for is intimacy: 20 rooms, a private-estate feel, and a food and beverage programme that now spans bucket-list fine dining and a genuinely fun neighbourhood-style room next door. Couples should book an Ocean Villa for the hot tub and sauna; if budget is tighter, a garden-view room is still strong. Shoulder season brings fireplaces, fewer crowds, and softer rates.
