Character and identity
The Cottages & Lofts at the Boat Basin are a cluster of 24 cedar-shake structures strung along Old South Wharf, jutting straight into Nantucket Harbor. Part of the White Elephant Resorts family but pitched as its more relaxed sibling, the property trades formal hotel polish for a salt-air, storybook-Nantucket feel: contemporary-coastal interiors recently reworked by local designer Audrey Sterk, with her signature mural wallpaper running through the studios, multi-bedroom cottages, and (unrenovated) lofts. There is no on-site food and beverage, no spa, and no traditional lobby beyond a small check-in. Service is efficient and professional, and free loaner bikes and a beach shuttle round out the offer.
Who's it for
Best for:
Couples and small groups who want a front-row seat to the harbour's parade of yachts, prize walkability into town, and a self-catering rhythm using the kitchenettes. Design-minded travellers and repeat Nantucket visitors who already know the island's restaurants will get the most from it.
Should look elsewhere:
Anyone wanting full-service resort amenities (on-site dining, spa, pool) should book the White Elephant proper or The Wauwinet. Families with small children face unrailed wharf edges, the lofts skip the recent renovation, mobility needs are limited by spiral staircases, and the structures can list slightly in wind.
Bottom line
What you are paying for is the location, not the hotel infrastructure: peak rates north of $2,000 buy a cedar cottage essentially on the water, seconds from town, with kitchenettes and bikes rather than room service and a concierge desk. Book a cottage with a private balcony if budget allows, target shoulder season for sharper rates, and plan to eat at Bar Yoshi and the wharf's neighbours.
