Character and identity
A grey-shingled manor from 1876 set nine miles from Nantucket Town on the island's remote northeastern tip, The Wauwinet feels marooned in the best sense: 32 rooms plus four cottages, two private beaches (one on the bay, one on the Atlantic), and a courtyard of white rocking chairs and bicycles out front. Rooms are spacious and pitched as a refined grande dame, with high Pratesi-topped beds and wicker-furnished terraces opening to lawn, beach and dock. Topper's, the island's standby restaurant, anchors the dining. The service register is warm, long-tenured and quietly competent. It is Nantucket's only Relais & Chateaux property.
Who's it for
Best for:
Couples and well-dressed adult travellers who want to genuinely unplug by the sea. The no-under-12s policy, the remoteness, the port-and-cheese hour, the Wauwinet Lady boat rides with a bartender aboard, the clay tennis courts and complimentary bikes all point to a slower, quieter, sociable-but-grown-up rhythm.
Should look elsewhere:
Families with young children are not permitted. Anyone who wants to walk out the door into Nantucket Town's restaurants and shops will find the half-hour drive (or hourly shuttle) tiresome. Action-seekers and nightlife people should stay downtown at the sister property, the White Elephant.
Bottom line
The defining quality here is the seclusion: a quiet, adults-only Nantucket retreat where the staff have been doing this for decades and the island's best dining room happens to be on site. Book if you want stillness over scene, and ask for a room with a terrace facing the lawn and water. Topper's is the meal to plan around; the Wauwinet Lady ride is the afternoon to keep free.
