Character and identity
Set across 113 acres of Litchfield County farmland, Winvian Farm scatters 18 architecturally distinct cottages and one main-house suite around a 1775 colonial anchor, each cabin commissioned from a different architect and committed to its own theme: a two-story Treehouse suspended in the canopy, a charcoal cube called Secret Society, a glass-walled Music cottage. The cooking leans hard on the onsite greenhouse and farm, split between the formal upstairs dining room and the more casual Maggie's Tavern. A large farmhouse-style spa, a gated entry, and quietly attuned service round out a place that reads, in the owner's framing, as "Norman Rockwell meets Alice in Wonderland."
Who's it for
Best for:
Couples after a romantic, design-led country escape, design literates who want to pick a cottage by concept rather than category, and active families in summer who'll use the trails, lawns, and pool. Food-driven travellers will be rewarded: the four-course tasting menu and Chef Chris Eddy's pasta-making class are genuine highlights.
Should look elsewhere:
Anyone wanting a walkable village setting or nightlife should pass; you need a car, and the property is deliberately secluded. Travellers who prefer uniform, predictable luxury rooms over playful, theme-committed architecture may find the cottages too eccentric. Winter visitors lose access to the pool and outdoor lawns.
Bottom line
The cottages are the entire proposition here: 18 fully realised architectural concepts, not interior-design variations, and choosing the right one matters more than at any conventional hotel. Splurge on the Treehouse if you want the signature experience, or browse the inventory to find the cottage whose concept actually speaks to you. Summer maximises the acreage; winter delivers fireside intimacy and quieter rates.
