Character and identity
Set within Unaweep Canyon at the western edge of Colorado's red rock country, Gateway Canyons Resort began life as a roadside motel and was rebuilt by Discovery Channel founder John Hendricks into a sprawling activity-driven retreat. Rooms lean spacious and lodge-luxe, with outdoor fireplaces and private soaking pools woven into many of the casitas. Five dining venues, a full-service spa, ballrooms, an outdoor amphitheatre and an on-site automobile museum housing a serious American car collection round out the footprint. The register is relaxed western hospitality rather than white-glove formality.
Who's it for
Best for:
Multi-generational families and groups who want a single base for a week of doing things: horseback rides from the equestrian centre, helicopter tours over Telluride and Canyonlands, white-water rafting on the Dolores, ATV and Baja truck experiences, and the Driven Experiences fleet of Bentleys and Porsches. Car enthusiasts in particular will find their tribe.
Should look elsewhere:
Travellers who want walkable urban energy, sophisticated tasting-menu dining or a polished resort-town scene should look elsewhere; this is genuinely remote western Colorado. Couples after a quiet design hotel may find the activity-and-group orientation, and summer family crowds, more than they bargained for.
Bottom line
The real reason to come is the activity programme, which is unusually deep: aviation, equestrian, motorsport, water and adventure operations all run in-house, with the car museum and luxury driving experience as genuine differentiators. Book a casita with a private hot tub, target spring or fall for thinner crowds and harvest-season winery access, and budget separately for the experiences, which is where the trip's character is made.
