Character and identity
Set on 160 acres where the Colorado River meets the red rock cliffs near Arches National Park, Sorrel River Ranch trades on one of the most theatrical landscapes in the American Southwest. The 55 rooms and suites lean rustic-chic, with sitting areas, deep baths, kitchenettes and private porches angled toward the river or the mountains; some deluxe suites catch both. A western aesthetic runs through the property: bonfires, horseback riding, a walking path along the river, two tennis courts, a pool, a fitness centre and a full-service spa. Dining is fine in the main lodge, casual on the outdoor decks.
Who's it for
Best for:
Couples and families who want Arches and Canyonlands at their doorstep without sleeping in a motel in Moab. The adventure concierge, riverside bonfires, horseback riding and stargazing pastures reward anyone who values landscape and outdoor programming over urban polish.
Should look elsewhere:
Travellers who want dining variety on property will feel the squeeze of a single restaurant; the kitchenette and a run into Moab are part of the deal. Anyone expecting walkable nightlife, a manicured resort bubble or a beach should book elsewhere.
Bottom line
The location does most of the heavy lifting here: cliffs, river and national park access you simply cannot replicate from town. Book a deluxe suite with dual river and mountain views, come in summer for rafting or in winter for snow-dusted red rock and empty trails, and plan at least one casual night in with the kitchenette.
