Character and identity
Set on Kem Beach at Phu Quoc's southern tip, this 234-room beachfront resort is the work of designer Bill Bensley, who has built the property around an elaborate invented backstory: the fictional Lamarck University, supposedly founded in 1894 and now reimagined as a hotel. The conceit runs through every public space, from the Department of Chemistry bar lined with periodic tables to a gym dressed as the Department of Physical Education, complete with trophies. Behind the theatre, rooms and villas come with sea views and private pools, supported by three outdoor pools, five restaurants and a spa.
Who's it for
Best for:
Design-literate couples and families who want a beach holiday with a strong creative point of view. If you appreciate maximalist storytelling, costume-trunk interiors and the chance to wander a resort that reads like an illustrated novel, this delivers. Honeymooners booking a pool villa and parents wanting a long, soft-sand beach base both fit the brief.
Should look elsewhere:
Travellers who find heavy theming exhausting or prefer a quiet, minimalist coastal aesthetic will struggle here; the Lamarck conceit is inescapable. Phu Quoc's southern location also means a long transfer from anywhere else in Vietnam, so it's not a stopover property.
Bottom line
The Bensley design is the entire proposition: you either commit to the fantasy or you've picked the wrong hotel. The good news is the luxury underneath the theming holds up, with proper villas, private pools and a real beach. Book a sea-view villa with pool, plan at least four nights to justify the journey south, and lean into the storytelling rather than resisting it.
