Silica Hotel
Review
Character and identity
Set in the lava fields of the Reykjanes Peninsula, Silica Hotel sits less than a kilometre from the main Blue Lagoon complex but feels entirely removed from its crowds. The property, formerly the Blue Lagoon Clinic Hotel and now sister to The Retreat, leans into a quiet, contemporary Nordic aesthetic that lets the volcanic landscape do the talking. Rooms open to moss-and-lava views, and the headline amenity is a private geothermal lagoon reserved for guests. A bistro and gym round out the offer, with breakfast and Wi-Fi included. Service is low-key rather than ceremonial.
Who's it for
Best for:
Couples and solo travellers who want the Blue Lagoon experience without the day-tripper queues, plus design-minded guests who value silence, geothermal bathing and a stark Icelandic landscape over urban buzz. A natural one or two-night pairing with a Keflavik arrival or departure.
Should look elsewhere:
Families wanting kids' programming, food-led travellers expecting multiple restaurants, and anyone seeking the full-fat luxury and treatment menu of sister property The Retreat. Reykjavik is a drive away, so this is not the base for city sightseeing or nightlife.
Bottom line
The draw here is the private guest-only lagoon and the buffer it puts between you and the Blue Lagoon's busloads, all for meaningfully less than The Retreat next door. Book it for one or two nights bookending a Keflavik flight, request a lava-view room, and aim for shoulder season when northern lights are possible but rates ease off peak.
