Character and identity
The Sonnenalp is a Bavarian-styled lodge in the heart of Vail Village, a short walk from Gondola One and Vail Mountain's 5,317 acres. Family-run since 1919 (the original property sits in the Allgäu Alps), it holds 115 rooms and suites tucked among evergreens and aspens along Gore Creek. Interiors lean into the Alpine fantasy: blonde wood, mounted antlers, gas fireplaces, plaid, dark ceiling beams. Four restaurants span schnitzel and raclette at Swiss Chalet to burgers at Bully Ranch, with King's Club for piano-led après. The spa, with skylit indoor-outdoor pool, hot tubs under the trees, and an oxygen bar, is the property's quiet headline act.
Who's it for
Best for:
Families and multi-generational groups who want to ski Vail without the logistical grind. The ski concierge at Gorsuch Cafe, the kids' club, the walkable village location, and the spa make it equally workable for hard chargers, lodge loungers, and small children. Also strong for fall foliage trips, summer golf and biking, and Taste of Vail in spring.
Should look elsewhere:
Design minimalists and travellers who find Alpine kitsch trying: the dirndls, lederhosen, and leaping-stag throw pillows are committed to the bit. Anyone wanting slope-side ski-in, ski-out convenience or a sleek, contemporary luxury aesthetic will be happier elsewhere on the mountain.
Bottom line
The defining experience here is the spa combined with the ski concierge: together they remove the friction from a Vail ski day in a way few village hotels manage. Book a suite with a fireplace and creek-facing balcony, lean into the Bavarian theme rather than resisting it, and target shoulder seasons (late September aspens, spring food and wine) if you want the rates to work harder.
